Studio Louter: The Movie Mirror
Searching without words
What if you can search a movie database with your entire body? We open up the Eye Filmmuseum collection like never before with The Movie Mirror – an interactive installation that combines computer vision and machine learning.
Eye Film Museum has an extensive collection with special and recognizable pieces such as Le voyage dans la Lune by Georges Méliès, De Overval and Ciske de Rat. To allow visitors to explore the collection in an innovative way, we developed The Movie Mirror. Through the combination of computer vision and machine learning, The Movie Mirror matches camera images of the user with stills from more than sixty films. From black and white classics, animations and documentaries to experimental films. In this selection of film stills, the installation has detected no fewer than 1,500,000 different poses. You can take different poses for the camera, play with composition and be surprised by your cinematic reflection.
The pilot of The Movie Mirror was presented during the Dutch Film Festival from 28 September to 4 October 2018 and part of the SEMIA symposium at the UvA in 2019.
Studio Louter developed The Movie Mirror in collaboration with Eye Filmmuseum and with support from the Creative Industries Fund NL.
