Rijksmuseum van Oudheden: Classical World
Linking cultures and objects in a new light
The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden will soon be opening its doors to an innovative exhibition about the Classical World. Studio Louter will be responsible for the multimedia and AV in the Greek exhibition halls. These halls will be dedicated to Greek cultures and their exchange with the Mediterranean and Near East.
The highlight of the exhibition is the central floor projection which focuses on a world map with trade contacts between the Greek regions and the Near East. Museum exhibits appear on the map and indicate the mutual influence of material culture.
Short animations provide the visitor with a context in which to look at the objects in a better or different way: how the collection came about, the manufacture of vases, the naming of civilisations and the oriental influence on mythological tales… Afterwards you will look at these wonderful objects in a slightly different way, details are clear and you can see that they didn’t just end up in the museum.
A wall projection shows that Greek culture has left its mark all over the world and is very influential to this day. In a hypnotising visual rhyme the visitor is confronted with the most surprising examples from our daily life. We know the goddess Venus from Greek mythology and Greek earthenware, for example, but we also know her from the Birth of Venus by Botticelli, and even as Venus razor blades by Gillette.
