Goddesses of Art Nouveau

Allard Pierson, Amsterdam (NL), 2020

Flowing lines and women portrayed as divine beings were all the rage in early 19th-century art and design. A film brings them to life like visions from a dream.

Female beauty

As an escape from the stresses of a rapidly changing society facing geopolitical turmoil and modernisation, artists created an exuberant new style. The Allard Pierson’s temporary exhibition ‘Goddesses of Art Nouveau’ examines the movement’s fascination with female beauty and locates it within its sociohistorical context.

Studio Louter made an introductory film about the goddesses of art nouveau. Between archival images from that turbulent era they will appear as visions from a dream.
