Interactivity at the Hermitage

Hermitage Amsterdam, Amsterdam (NL), 2009 - 2011

The Hermitage on the Amstel opened in 2009 and met with instant success. Studio Louter was a steady partner in the museum’s development of its digital interpretation materials.

Simple interaction

Visitors could follow themed digital routes between objects. Short texts provide context and illuminate links between objects. The interaction principles are extremely simple and were selected with a specific target group in mind: older museumgoers unaccustomed to using interactive media.

A reusable format

The same format was used in the museum’s first five exhibitions, ‘At the Russian Court’; ‘Matisse to Malevich’; ‘The Immortal Alexander the Great’; ‘Splendour and Glory’; and ‘Rubens, Van Dyck & Jordaens’. In each case, we customised the content and added a unique element to the interaction.

Orthodox Mass and Alex TV

Visitors got to look inside the houses of the pioneering modern art collectors Shchukin and Morozov and see Mass being held in Russian Orthodox churches in Amsterdam, Pskov and St Petersburg. The film ‘Alex TV’ illustrated how Alexander the Great continues to inspire everything from documentaries to feature films, school projects to games.
