Get into the picture with history

Het Rijksvastgoedbedrijf, The Hague (NL), 2023

The Binnenhof and Museum Quarter in The Hague are brimming with historical and cultural narratives. A new augmented reality tour around the Binnenhof makes visitors a part of it all.

The many-sided Binnenhof

Over the centuries, the Binnenhof, home of the Dutch government, has played host to religious confrontations, lavish celebrations, exotic animals and political debates. The buildings around Hofplein have functioned as residences, a meeting hall, a military base, even a prison.

The Binnenhof will remain closed to the public for the next few years while major renovations take place. Meanwhile, the Central Government Real Estate Agency has commissioned us to unlock some of the area’s stories for visitors with the help of technology.

Augmented Reality-tour

In cooperation with Tjep., we’ve developed an augmented reality tour around the Binnenhof. Visitors can scan QR codes at three sites along Lange Poten (on the windows of the Dutch House of Representatives) and two more on the construction fence on Plein square.

There, they can meet historical figures and discover locations and trades linked to the Netherlands’ political heart. When you scan a QR code, an AR figure appears on the screen like a real person materialising in front of you. Take a photo with the 15th-century countess Jacoba of Bavaria as she relinquishes power, swim in the canal around the Binnenhof, or stand guard with a gatekeeper at the former Spuipoort. At each stop, visitors receive additional information in text, image, and audio form.

“The AR tour gives a new boost to the Binnenhof area and links it to the Museum Quarter.”

Museum Quarter

The Binnenhof AR tour is connected to the Museum Quarter web app that we developed in 2021 for the city of The Hague. Thus, it extends the existing interactive walk through the cultural heart of the seat of Dutch government.
