Learning Nature

KINA Museum voor Kind en Natuur, Ghent (BE), 2025

KINA intends to renew itself in the coming years, without losing its distinctive character. Together, we developed a clear compass to guide future choices in presentation and programming.

Museum for Children and Nature

KINA - Museum for Children and Nature has two sites in the historic city centre of Ghent. The museum is much loved by children and families in the region and introduces them to nature in a playful way. Studio Louter supported the museum in developing a strategic and conceptual vision for its exhibition programme.

The need for direction

Although KINA has already taken steps towards renewal, an overarching framework to align decisions wasn't there yet. Galleries and programmes had evolved organically, but not always from a shared conceptual vision. The museum therefore sought structure and guidance to enable gradual renewal, without becoming constraint by rigid plans.

A masterplan for the future

Studio Louter began a co-creative process with the museum team. During a Pressure Cooker Session, we formulated the central concept: ‘Learning about nature: back to basics’. A place where children and families can learn to understand, appreciate and care for nature. The result is a masterplan that enables the team to continue building the museum’s future independently, collaboratively and with confidence.

It’s great that together with Studio Louter we were able and dared to reflect on how we work. We can (once again) be proud of our museum.”
