Cool Japan

Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden (NL), 2017

Around the world, Japanese culture speaks to people’s imaginations. But what exactly do Dutch museumgoers associate with Japan?

A questionnaire for your body

To find out, we developed an interactive Kinect application with the Dutch national ethnology museum. It asked visitors to demonstrate their associations with Japan in a fun way. They didn’t just answer questions in the usual manner but responded to them by striking a pose. They might be asked to point to the most Japanese object or assume the posture of the most Japanese character. The Kinect camera captured their responses and combined them with those of other visitors. In this way, visitors demonstrated their fascination with Japan as a group.
