World of Shapes

NEMO Science Museum, Amsterdam (NL), 2014

Maths is complicated and boring – until you discover that we live in a world of shapes, and that maths can help you understand them.

Shape your world

Mathematics, and geometry in particular, is the subject of one of NEMO’s permanent exhibitions. In a world of geometrical forms, kids can play with optical illusions and perspective and learn about mathematical principles in a fun way. There are loads of activities in the World of Shapes. Kids can make patterns, ride in cars with rigid wheels, and see themselves as giants in the Ames room.

A participatory centrepiece

In the middle of the World of Shapes, a giant sun turns. Visitors can play with the yellow triangles that make it up – no rules, no instructions. As they manipulate the shapes, visitors change the look of the exhibition.

“At NEMO, kids can discover that maths doesn’t have to be boring, like at school – there’s much more to it.”
