A radical museum

Paisley Museum, Paisley (UK)

The Paisley Museum is undergoing a radical refurbishment. The redesign is part of a plan to put the city on the international cultural map.

History from below

The revamped museum will take a bottom-up approach, telling the stories of the working class, the outcasts and the nonconformists. In the 19th century, Paisley had an important textile industry, famous for its eponymous pattern. Little-known stories from the era – of women and “draw-boys”, children who worked in the weaving mills – will come to life in the museum. In the late 1970s and 1980s, Paisley was the centre of Scottish punk. Punks of the time will share their stories here too.

A mosaic of 100 stories

The museum has collected 100 extraordinary everyday stories and we are creating a unique, meaningful display for each. The exhibition rejects all forms of hierarchy: every story is as important as every other. The mosaic of stories and objects gives visitors a colourful, multifaceted picture of the history of Paisley and its inhabitants.
