Parliamentary debate

ProDemos, The Hague (NL), 2022

Politicians often have their phones close at hand during debates. They use them to keep up with the news, message party associates, and check email. In ProDemos’s mock parliamentary debates, things are no different.

Political role play

In a replica Dutch House of Representatives, pupils debate the issues just as real politicians do. Divided into parties with different views and ideals, they discuss proposed changes in the law, such as raising the drinking age to 21 and making public transport free.

Decision-making process

Pupils use their phones to learn more about the subject under discussion, the views of the party rank and file, and their own role in the debate. In this way, they learn about how a debate proceeds and the importance of opinion polls in decision-making.

For the future

ProDemos’s mock debates have been around for a while and have proven a hit with secondary school pupils. With ProDemos, Bente van Bourgondiën and Studio Parkers, we gave the app a new look and overhauled the code, future-proofing a tool that itself helps to form the decision-makers of tomorrow.
