A beacon in time

Waterlandsmuseum de Speeltoren, Monnickendam (NL)

For centuries, the ringing of the bells in the belfry gave rhythm to the days in Monnickendam. These days, the tower is too dangerous to climb. The carillon room at Waterlandsmuseum de Speeltoren provides a glimpse inside this beacon in time.

An audible witness

The tower has witnessed more than 500 years of Monnickendam history. From a reconstruction of the watchtower in the carillon room, visitors can experience important turning points like the Battle on the Zuiderzee and the introduction of trams in 1888. Soon they’ll even be able to play the bells like a real carillonneur.

Engineering and music

Films, information screens and displayed objects show how technical coordination enables the tower to produce beautiful sounds. The exhibit sets out the history and technology of this beacon in time.
